Cradled in a manger, meanly. George Stringer Rowe* (1830-1913).
This graceful hymn has been used almost exclusively by British Methodists: it was included in two books for Sunday schools, the Wesleyan Methodist Sunday School Hymn Book (1879) and the Primitive Methodist Sunday School Hymnal (1901), but although Rowe was a member of the committee for ‘Wesley’s Hymns’ (1876) it was not included in that book, which suggests that it may have been written between 1876 and 1879. It was included in the Wesleyan Methodist Hymn Book (1904), and it has continued to be popular among British Methodists (MHB, HP). It is also found in some evangelical books, such as Christian Praise (1957):
