Colin Gibson
GIBSON, Colin Alexander. b. Dunedin, New Zealand, 26 March 1933; d. Dunedin, 10 December 2022. He was educated at Otago Boys’ High School and the University of Otago (he studied English, classics and music and completed a doctorate in English literature), Christchurch Training College and the University of Canterbury. He became Donald Collie Professor of English and chairman of the Department of English at the University of Otago, where he taught for 42 years. From 1956 until his death he was organist and choirmaster at Mornington Methodist Church, Dunedin; from 1958 onwards he lectured and wrote on hymnody, the work of the Wesleys, and New Zealand hymn writers.
