GIBSON, Colin Alexander. b Dunedin, New Zealand, 26 March 1933. He was educated at Otago Boys’ High School and the University of Otago (he studied English, classics and music and completed a doctorate in English literature), Christchurch Training College and the University of Canterbury. He became Donald Collie Professor of English and chairman of the Department of English at the University of Otago, where he taught for 42 years. Since 1956 he has been organist and choirmaster at Mornington Methodist Church, Dunedin; since 1958 he has lectured and written on hymnology and the work of the Wesleys and New Zealand hymn writers.
