This hymn was first published in Eyn Enchiridion oder Handbuchlein (Erfurt, 1524) with the title ‘Der Hymnus. A solis ortu’. It had eight 4-line stanzas. It is Luther’s version of ‘A solis ortus cardine’* by Sedulius* (cf. ‘Was fürchtst du, Feind Herodes, sehr’*).
