Written in 1973 at the request of the Revd Dirk van Dissel of Australia. It deals principally with the narrative of the Baptism of Christ, only transferring to ‘Baptise us with your Spirit, Lord’ in verse 4: it is a hymn of dedication rather than a hymn for infant baptism. It originally began ‘Christ, for our sake thou wast baptized’, and it went through several revisions before publication in H82 with the first line as above (see The Hymnal 82 Companion, volume 3A, pp. 251-3, note to hymn 121).
