Charles Henry Purday
PURDAY, Charles Henry. b. Folkestone, Kent, 11 January 1799; d. Kensington, London, 23 April 1885. The son of a bookseller, he was a music publisher, editor, and composer. He served as precentor of the Scottish Church, Crown Court, Drury Lane, London, which led to the publication of Crown Court Psalmody (1854). He was greatly interested in composers' rights, and published Copyright. A Sketch of its Rise and Progress: the Acts of Parliament and Conventions with foreign nations now in force, with suggestions (1877). In addition to many single publications of songs, hymns, and ballads, he edited The Sacred Musical Offering (1833), and One hundred and one popular psalm and hymn tunes (1860)...
