Cecil Henry Boutflower
BOUTFLOWER, Cecil Henry. b. Brathay, Windermere (now in Cumbria), 15 August 1863; d. Oxford, 19 March 1942. He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford (BA 1884, MA 1889). He took Holy Orders (deacon 1887, priest 1888), serving a curacy at St Mary’s, South Shields, Co. Durham (now Tyne and Wear) (1887-1890). He was chosen by Brooke Foss Westcott to be his domestic chaplain during Westcott’s time as Bishop of Durham (1890-1901), serving until a few days before the bishop’s death. He then became vicar of Barrow-in-Furness (1901-05), before being consecrated Bishop of Dorking (1905-09). He was Bishop of South Tokyo (1909-21) and Bishop of Southampton (1921-33).
