By Christ redeemed, in Christ restored. George Rawson* (1807-1889).
This, which JJ, p. 198, called ‘a hymn of more than usual excellence’, was written in 1857 for Psalms and Hymns for the use of the Baptist Denomination (1858), a book in which Rawson assisted the Baptist compilers. It had six stanzas, printed in full in the Congregational Church Hymnal (1887) and the Congregational Hymnary (1916), shortened to five stanzas in MHB and CP. It was reprinted in Rawson’s Hymns, Verses and Chants (1876), with stanza 3 line 1 changed from ‘His fearful drops of agony’ to ‘The streams of His dread agony’. The six-stanza text was as follows:
