Breast the wave, Christian. Joseph Stammers* (1801-1885).
This hymn in three stanzas was first published in 1830 in a local periodical, the Cottage Magazine, edited by John Buckworth, the vicar of Dewsbury. According to JJ, p. 1085, it came into more general use in the Baptist Psalms and Hymns (1858) and (altered) in The People’s Hymnal (1867). It was included in its original text in The Hymnal Companion to the Book of Common Prayer (Third Edition, revised and enlarged, 1890). It seems to have fallen out of use in Britain in the 20th century.
