PULKINGHAM, Betty Carr. b. Burlington, North Carolina, 25 August 1928. Her mother was a lifelong Baptist and her father had Scottish Presbyterian roots, but joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. She attributes her ecumenical approach to her early experience of both traditions.
She grew up with music around her at school and home. She learned the piano from the age of eight, and from the age of ten was playing for the hymns at her Sunday School. Later, she was one of the worship leaders for the youth fellowship at her Methodist church.
