Asian and Asian American hymns, USA This essay updates a portion of Carlton R. Young*’s earlier study (1998) on the inclusion of ethnic congregational song in hymnals published 1942-95 by the Protestant Episcopal Church, The Evangelical Lutheran Church, The Christian Reformed Church, The United Methodist Church, The Presbyterian Church (USA), The Southern Baptist Church, The United Church of Christ, and the Disciples of Christ. His detailed work noted a distinct increase of ethnic minority hymns in part resulting from those churches’ attempts to connect with ethnically diverse cultures and reflect global missions’ new paradigms that speak of partnership rather than benefactorship.
