Annie Herbert
HERBERT, Annie (Annie Herbert Barker). b. Leon, New York State, 1844; d. San Rafael, California, 21 January 1932. She was born in a small town in Cattaraugus County on the western edge of New York State. She married her cousin, James Barker, Jr., but is more often known as a hymn writer by her maiden name. She was a teacher: she and her husband must have been courageous and intrepid young people, for they worked for a time with the pioneers in Meagher County in what was then the remote state of Montana, perhaps as teachers. They settled in Marin County, California in 1888. She is remembered for the hymn ‘When the mists have rolled in splendor’*.
