Annabel Morris Buchanan
BUCHANAN, Annabel Morris. b. Groesbeck, Texas, 22 October 1888; d. Paducah, Kentucky, 6 January 1983. Raised in Texas and Tennessee as the daughter and grand-daughter of Cumberland Presbyterian ministers, she was from earliest childhood familiar with the idiom of southern folk hymnody; she learned to read music from oblong shape-note tunebooks. After formal training and graduation with highest honors from the Landon Conservatory in Dallas, she taught music at colleges in Oklahoma and Virginia until 1912, when she married attorney John Preston Buchanan (1888-1937) of Marion, Virginia.
