Maxwell N. Cornelius
CORNELIUS, Maxwell N. b. Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, 30 July 1842; d. Washington, DC, 31 March 1893. The son of a farmer, he trained as a carpenter, and became a building contractor. In an accident, he broke a leg, which had to be amputated: Cornelius survived the operation, and decided to train as a minister. After education at a Presbyterian college, the Vermillion Institute, Hayesville, Ohio, he went on to the seminary there from 1867 to 1871. He was ordained into the Pittsburgh Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church, USA, and served pastorates at Oakdale, Pennsylvania; Altoona, PA; Pasadena, California; San Francisco, CA; and Washington, DC, from 1891 until his death from pneumonia...
