(Robert) Hugh Benson

BENSON, (Robert) Hugh. b. Crowthorne, Berkshire, 18 November 1871; d. Salford, Lancashire, 19 October 1914. He was the youngest son of Edward White Benson*, at that time Headmaster of Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, later Archbishop of Canterbury. An older brother was Arthur Christopher Benson*. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge (BA 1893, MA 1898). He took Holy Orders (deacon 1894, priest 1895). His ordination by his father must have been a remarkable moment for both; his father died in the following year.
